NEXOF-RA (NEXOF Reference Architecture) project is the first step in the process of building NEXOF, the generic open platform for creating and delivering applications enabling the creation of service based ecosystems where service providers and third parties easy collaborate.

The overall ambition of the NEXOF-RA project is to build a Reference Architecture for the NESSI Open Framework - ranging from the infrastructure up to the interfaces with the end users - leveraging research in the area of service-based systems to consolidate and trigger innovation in service oriented economies.

The NEXOF Reference Architecture is composed of three main elements: architectural Guidelines and Principles, the Reference Model, and the Reference Specifications. The Reference Specifications element in turn is composed of three elements: the Pattern Ensemble, The Standards Catalogue, and the Components Catalogue, while the Reference Model also contains the Glossary. The next figure shows all the blocks.

The main assets of NEXOF-RA form in particular the concepts and process for specifying, assessing and comparing / selecting architectural patterns, rather than the patterns themselves. Instead, the patterns identified serve in particular as examples of the quality and validity of the approach.

Following you can see listed the final outcomes of the NEXOF-RA project:

  • The Open Architecture Specification processes
  • The Architectural Framework, Principles and Model
  • A sample set of Architectural Patterns
    • Enterprise SOA Pattern
    • IoS Pattern
    • Cloud and IaaS Patterns
  • Description of the Processes, Principles and Selection Criteria behind PoC and Assessment
  • Instantiation Guidelines
  • Roadmap

NEXOF-RA Open Construction Process

The process of building the Reference Architecture has been completely open to the community. The project has received contributions from other FP7 projects (mainly NESSI (www.nessi-europe.eu) Strategic Projects), from other national research projects across Europe, from universities and research centers. The contributions have been implemented through periodical open Invitations to Contribute. You may find at our web site the current open Invitations to Contribute and we invite you to participate:
