Abstract: Establishing Web services as resources on the Web opens up productive, but challenging new possibilities for open, highly dynamic and loosely-coupled service economies. In addition, lifting services to the semantic level provides a sophisticated means for automating the main service-related management processes and the composition of arbitrary functionalities into new services and businesses. In this article we present the SOA4All approach to a global service delivery platform. By means of semantic technologies, SOA4All facilitates the creation of service infrastructures and increases the interoperability between large numbers of distributed and heterogeneous functionalities on the Web.

Technical Whitepapers

This section is dedicated to technical whitepapers which are related to new trends and solutions in software and services within various scientific and technical fields, including – but not limited to :

  • Service Oriented Architectures,
  • Cloud and Grid Computing,
  • Software as a Service,
  • Virtualization.

These whitepapers present overall technical solutions within these fields at infrastructure, architecture and application level, as well as innovative research findings and implemented solutions on specific areas, including Service Levels Agreement Management, Security, Portals, Data Management and License Management among others.

Cloud Computing General

  • Application Architecture for Cloud Computing

Designing an application to run as a virtual appliance in a cloud computing environment is very different than designing it for an on-premise or SaaS deployment. This articles discusses some of the key aspects for developers.

Data Management

This paper presents the experience done by the main results achieved by the Data Management technical area of the BEinGRID project.

e-Infrastructures

This document gives details of the 2009 e-IRG Recommendations which cover global collaboration, education and training in the use of e-Infrastructure, grid and cloud computing, security, service centric e-infrastructures through virtualisation, remote instrumentation, and sustainability of computing-related e-Infrastructure.

Financials

This document introduces the first conclusions about The Open Group work on building and analyzing Cloud Computing ROI.

General Security

This paper presents the Security Observer, that is a component been envisioned to monitor various security properties in a Grid environment and to notify entities that compose it when a possible security flaw is detected.

Green computing

This paper analyzes energetic effects of cloud computing data centers and examines the way a provider can achieve optimal energy sustainability of running HPC workloads across its entire Cloud infrastructure.

Integrated Solutions

Whitepaper produced by the Global Inter-Coud Technology Forum where both quality requirements for inter-cloud computing and some use cases are presented. This document shows the needing of an inter-cloud computing environment in order to satisfy demands for guaranteed quality of service availability and performance, procuring resources from various cloud providers and avoiding vendor lock-in.

This whitepaper presents three business scenarios developed within BEinGRID project showing the benefits of integrating security capabilities and portals ones. The whitepaper isstrongly recommended to the adopters of the Security and Portal solutions developed in BEinGRID in order to understand the impact and business benefits of designing and developing a solution integrating both the results.

This paper presents an overview of how the technical results achieved in the BEinGRID project can be combined to solve common problems in business scenarios.

License Management

This Whitepaper describes the architecture of the SmartLM solution for creating and managing a new type of software licenses. While SmartLM licenses have been designed with a focus on distributed computing infrastructures like Grids or Clouds the SmartLM solution leverages its benefits also in other computing environments based on for example resources of an application service provider, local workstations or clusters.

This paper presents the Licence Management Architecture developed in the BEinGRID project. This solution overcomes the current lack of a grid solution for client-server based license management.

Middleware related Whitepapers

This paper presents the experience done by the SLA thematic area in improving GT4 services to allow receiving WS-Notification. It is targeted to developers willing to learn how this issue has been addressed inside BEinGRID.

Portals

This paper presents a set of business scenarios to show the benefits and impact of the capabilities and software components developed by the BEinGRID Portal area.

Research

The scope of this report is to present the current situation and use of cloud computing in research, focusing on Infrastructure as a Service (IAAS) and Platform as a Service (PAAS). It's intended to aid in the decision process, so further critical thinking is required from researchers.

Service Oriented Infrastructure

This whitepaper presents the Intelligent Service Oriented Network Infrastructure (ISONI), which comprises the core of the IRMOS Infrastructure-as-a-Service layer.

The IRMOS Application Blueprint serves as a reference guide for application developers. This document contains all the critical information that is needed in order for an application to be adapted on the IRMOS framework, a Service Oriented platform that allows both for interactivity but also for QoS guarantees across a virtualized infrastructure.

SLA Management

This paper reports the BEinGRID research results in designing and developing an integrated architecture for SLA management on top of GT4.

Standardisation

An effective EU ICT standardisation policy can encourage the faster uptake of new technologies and applications thereby contributing to the competitiveness of the European economy as a whole. This white paper examines how to achieve a modern ICT standardisation policy

VO-Management

This paper presents the experience done by the VO Management technical area of the BEinGRID project during the analysis of concrete case studies in several business domains. Main results are described and presented together with the lessons learnt during our activities.

This paper presents the Enhanced Application Virtualisation capability which enables the management of the deployment, distribution, coordination and configuration of capabilities and resources required for offering applications distributed over a federated set of network hosts. It can be used to add an instrumentation layer and coordinate different service execution environments in order to enable the secure and manageable application exposure of remotely hosted (and potentially distributed) applications.

This paper addresses Virtual Organization management in distributed systems. The Virtual Organization (VO) concept is a quite broad concept and encompasses various fields and contexts. A key feature of a VO is that it is established in a short time to dynamically respond to a collaboration opportunity (business or scientific) and its nature may be transient, i.e. its lifecycle may have a defined duration and may also be short. To ensure the achievement of the VO objectives, adequate VO management is required. The main challenges of VO management come directly from its key features and include the management of the VO lifecycle, the definition of agreements, policies and models to allow a secure and managed access to shared and distributed resources, services, information and knowledge. Challenges also include reliable and continuous performance monitoring (of members and resources).
